Professor Wiesner advances a research focus on entrepreneurial leadership, high performance management and organisational behaviour. She is interested in the study of how entrepreneurial behaviour, high performance human resource and business sustainability strategies influence positive organisational outcomes. She is also interested in determinants of behavioural change and the development of interventions/capacity building programs that engage and enable people to higher performance. Retha has designed and implemented numerous capacity building programs for women entrepreneurs and SMEs, organisational development programs for blue chip companies and conducted research that involved large longitudinal data sets. Integral to all her work is how individuals and organisations can reach their full potential.  
She is currently leading five major research projects. The first is a project on Advancing Women in Rural Enterprises through Entrepreneurship, funded by the Department of Industry Innovation and Science. This project will be conducted during 2017 - 2018. The second is an international project funded by DFAT on "Empowering Women through Entrepreneurship, Digital Innovation and Business Sustainability. Seven international agencies in Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are involved in this project. The third is collaborating with state-wide project in partnership with CCIQ (lead), focusing on fostering business sustainability in Queensland SMEs (ecoBiz).  The Fourth is a project on "Big Data For Small Business" funded by Advance Queensland. Finally, a project focusing on "Building Women's Start-up Resilience in Regional Queensland", funded by Advance Queensland.
